Basic Characteristics of a Helicopter

Helicopters are rotorcraft that take off and land vertically. They can fly forward and backward as well as fly laterally. In addition, these aircraft are capable of hovering. Here are some of the basic characteristics of a helicopter. The basic design of a helicopter is quite simple. A helicopter has four rotors. Each rotor has a unique blade shape. The design allows for the rotors to rotate at different speeds.

The mechanical parts of a helicopter include the rotor blades, which are connected to a rotating mast by a feathering hinge. The pitch links are short rods that can tilt the blades to a shallower or steeper angle. The pitch links are controlled by a rotating upper swash plate that spins on bearings around a static lower swash plate. Eventually, this mechanism will make the helicopter stable and allow it to hover safely.

The main rotor of a helicopter is made of two main rotors that rotate in opposite directions. The rotor discs produce lift in one direction and drag in the other.
