What Is A Gimbal?

What are gimbal? A gimbal is simply a pivoted stand that allows rotation of any object on an inclined axis. A pair of three such gimbal, one on each side of the hinge, can be used to enable an object mounted at the base of the pivot to stay parallel to the hinge. The other gimbal can be rotated 90 degrees to provide support for objects mounted at the apex of the pivot. Thus the name "pivot gimbal".

The simplest gimbal use two motors, each providing independent operation of one or bothaxis. Motors A and B are typically of high strength but inexpensive plastic axles connected in series. The shafts of Motors A and B rotate in a XY fashion around a pivot point. The two opposing ends of Motors A and B form a third axis of rotation around which the camera lens and other optical components may rotate. The electrical drive system is typically part of a camera lens arm.

There are many benefits to using inertial measurement units instead of velocity or acceleration values. First, gimbal systems can be designed to give maximum performance while minimizing distortion. Second, gimbals can be calibrated and tested without using velocity or acceleration measurements. Finally, high angular gimbal systems give photographers unprecedented stability. With inertial measurement units, camera lens, and other components of a gimbal can be aligned so that the camera lens will always point towards the target and not rotate during the exposure.

As mentioned above, some videographers prefer to shoot their videos and photos using two or three gimbals instead of using only one. For example, a videographer may want to position the camera so that the focus is on a face in the crowd during a live action video. When filming a short video, however, this may not be possible. In this situation, the videographer will need to rely on his or her gimbal to keep the focus on the subject. In this case, it is important to select gimbal systems with stable, anti-shake movements so that the subject remains steady during the video shoot.

The key to using inertial measurement units in a gimbal system is having a gimbal lock. This refers to a piece of equipment that allows only one axis of rotation to occur during one complete cycle of the gimbal. This will prevent the camera from wiggling in any one particular direction. To "lock" the gimbal, a technician will attach a locking pin to one end of the gimbal lock. The locking pin is then connected to an arm, usually in the back, with the locking mechanism serving as a lever that prevents the arm from moving out of alignment with the gimbal lock. By doing this, the camera will remain fixed in one particular axis of movement during filming.

Of course, the use of inertial measurement units is not limited to just the production of television and film. Medical professionals use these in the same way as filmmakers and videographers. In order to better diagnose and treat patients, doctors rely on a digital recording of their movements. By using a hand-held device, they are able to record 3-D images of their body at all times. The images are then converted into text for interpretation by the doctor. The data saved in the digital file is then transferred directly to the relevant system via the Internet.
